What to Wear for a Newborn Photo Shoot In 2024

What to wear to your photo session is the number one question I get as a photographer. And while it feels like there are a million guides out there for in-home newborn sessions, it can be hard to find a what to wear guide for newborn studio photos! Lucky for you, with my experience as a studio newborn photographer, I have tips and tricks to help you feel your best.

Choosing Colors For Your Newborn Photoshoot:

I photograph all of my newborn studio sessions on a simple, white background. Not only does this let your baby be the focus, it gives your session a clean, modern, but timeless look.

I suggest choosing neutrals, muted pastels or earth tones. These types of colors photograph very well and make everyone look their best. You can also never go wrong with neutrals like white, cream, gray, or black. These colors are timeless and will never go out of style, plus they keep the focus where it belongs - on your new baby!

If you prefer patterns over solid colors, small and understated patterns like a calico or small stripes are also fine. They read as a solid pattern from the camera’s perspective, and keep your clothing from becoming the focal point of the session.

Layers or textures like a chunky knitted sweater, eyelet, tulle, denim, or a shirt with a collar can really add visual interest and depth to a portrait.

Some Things to Avoid:

While I want your session to reflect who you are as a family, there are some things I would suggest you avoid when choosing outfits for your newborn photos:

  • Avoid logos or graphics. Not only are they distracting, they tend to date your photos much faster than other clothing choices.

  • Large patterns or florals. They tend to cause chaos, distract from faces, and create busy images.

  • Avoid too many accessories. These can get in the way of handing your new baby and also date your images.

  • No neon colors. Your clothes will reflect light back on to your skin, and neon colors create unflattering skin tones, especially on newborns!

  • I also suggest not over accessorizing with lots of jewelry or scarves.

What Should My Baby Wear for Newborn Photos?

Teeny tiny newborns are so precious and perfect. I love to photograph them just in their diapers (I have diaper covers!) or a simple white onesie If you would like your baby photographed in a white onesie, please have them come dressed already in that outfit. Here is a link to a classic onesie!

If you plan on having your baby photographed in just their diapers, bring them to their session in an easily removable outfit that does not leave marks on the skin. Like just a snap or zip on sleeper with no onesie underneath. This allows me to undress your baby without too much fuss which could cause them to wake up.

Although tiny jeans, shoes, and fussy dresses are so cute, I find it really hard to maneuver your baby and get all the variety of photos that we want that show their sweet features. Save those adorable outfits for your next family outing!

Do I Need To Bring a Blanket to our Newborn Photo Session?

Blankets are an important accessory when photographing newborns. When considering a blanket to use a your newborn session we want something comforting to your baby but also something that will be beautiful in your photos.

I have several white and cream blankets that we can use to snuggle your baby in from a light swaddle for comfort, a cozy knit for texture, and a fun gauzy blanket for draping.

I also understand that you might want to bring your own blanket for your baby. If this is the case:

  • Bring a swaddle blanket in a neutral color. It is important to have a blanket like this to help comfort and sooth your baby if they are uncomfortable.

  • Also consider a knit blanket for extra coziness and texture and depth for your photos.

Outfits for Older Babies (6-12 Months):

With older babies (6-12 months) I do think starting off with a cute outfit is a good idea. Just be sure it is an outfit that your baby is comfortable in and won’t cause them to be itchy or upset. You can even consider dressing your baby in a sentimental outfit or one that has a special meaning to you.

I do eventually like getting your baby just in their diapers at this older stage as well. That we can capture all their cute little rolls and belly buttons!

What To Wear In Newborn Photos for Mom:

It is important that you feel like you in the clothes they are wearing. How you feel in your clothes is just as important as what you’re actually wearing. So whatever you pick, be sure you feel confident and comfortable in your clothes. It really does make a world of difference.

I have some new moms that prefer wearing a flowy dress because they are comfortable and also flattering. Some moms come in wearing an oversized top and leggings, and other moms wear a textured sweater and jeans. You can come in as dressed up or as casual as you would like. Just be you!

What To Wear for Newborn Photos for Dad:

Keep it simple! Honestly what I think looks best for dad is a nice pair of jeans or chinos with a fresh t-shirt or button up. Casual but classy!

What to Wear for Newborn Photos for Older Siblings:

I have three kids of my own, so I know exactly how hard it is to get everyone dressed and out the door! My suggestions for finding outfits for older siblings for newborn photos:

  • Go with coordinating rather than matchy matchy. Find outfits that have colors and style in common, but avoid putting everyone in the exact same dress/dress shirt.

  • Be sure to also make sure their outfits don’t bother them in any way, like too hot, or itchy, or too tight. We want a happy toddler and not an itchy one!

  • Don’t worry too much about shoes. I prefer seeing the bottom of cute little toes rather than shoe soles. Bare feet are just so cute!
